DAR Honors Dr. Darby

December 6--  There's been a dentist named Darby in Vidalia for almost as long as the town has existed and this week the local Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Dr. Lloyd Darby with the organization's Community Service Award.

Dr. Darby gave up his practice this year but almost immediately was asked to help the Medical College of Georgia with a rural dental outreach program in cooperation with the Mercy Medical Clinic and Southeast Georgia Healthcare.

He's overseeing the work of students who come to Vidalia to help low income patients with dental care.

"The Dental College interviewed me and asked me to accept an appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry and the school started sending these students down,"  Dr. Darby says.

So far six students have spent time seeing patients in Vidalia and five more are on the way in January.

Trent Herring of Wrightsville says they're learning a lot.  "Oh, we're learning a ton.  Dr. Darby has a story for everything and we listen to everything he has to say.  We're getting to learn comprehensive dentistry while at the same time learning what a small town has to offer," he reports.

The other student, Dustin Kilby of Tifton, agrees.  "I'm getting a lot of experience working with Dr. Darby and not only that, we get to see where he fits in the community and how respected he is.  For Trent and I both, it helps us see our future regarding the kind of impact we need to have when we go back to our communities," Kilby says.
