Vikings Sting Hornets in OT for Win
Saturday, 29 September 2012

September 28--  The Treutlen Vikings traveled to Savannah for the second week in a row, but this time with better results as they defeated the Savannah Country Day Hornets in overtime by a score of 31 - 25.  It had been 30 years since the Vikings last beat the Hornets in Savannah.

Treutlen would take the opening kickoff and proceed on an 8:05 drive of 78 yards to take the lead on a 10 yard pass from Junior QB Matthew Powell to Drew Gillis.  The PAT was blocked but the Vikings led 6 - 0.  Savannah Country Day would answer with 1 second left in the first quarter when Ben Johnson intercepted an overthrown screen pass and return it 15 yards for the score.  The PAT was successful and the Hornets led 7 - 6.

With 7:11 left in the second quarter, Viking QB Matthew Powell would score on a 7 yard run but the 2 point conversion attempt failed and Treutlen had the lead again 12 - 7.  After exchanging punts and turnovers, SCD kicker Harley Lichtenberg would connect on a 37 yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to make the score Treutlen 12, Savannah Country Day 10 at the half.

The Vikings would add to their lead with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter when Matthew Powell scored on a 2 yard run.  Again, the 2 point conversion failed and the Vikes led 18 - 10.  Treutlen appeared to put the game away with 1:36 left in the third quarter when Keon King took a swing pass 18 yards and dove just inside the pylon for the touchdown.  The PAT by Brad Cammack was successful and Treutlen led 25 - 10.

The Hornets of Savannah Country Day would not die yet as they returned the kickoff 65 yards to score.  The Harley Lichtenberg PAT was good and the Viking lead was cut to 8 points, 25 - 17.  Then with only 4 seconds remaining in regulation, SCD receiver Demetrius Robinson would make a diving, one handed grab in the endzone for a Hornet TD.  SCD QB Hayes McMath would call his own number on a bootleg and get in the endzone for the 2 point conversion sending the contest into overtime.

Savannah Country Day would go on offense first but the Viking defense would sack SCD QB McMath for a deep loss on third down putting them out of field goal range.  Their 4th down pass attempt was incomplete and the Viking defense had held.  Now it was up to the Treutlen offense to put up points for the win.  Viking QB Matthew Powell would find receiver Kyle Rosen 3 plays later for an 11 yard TD reception and the Vikings had pulled out the win, 31 - 25.

The Vikings return to Bobby Driggers Stadium next week for homecoming to do battle with their long time rivals, the Montgomery County Eagles.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 and can be heard on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM.
