Treutlen Falls on the Road to Cavs
Saturday, 22 September 2012

September 21--  The Treutlen Vikings took to the road for the first time this season to battle with the #5 team in Class A, the Calvary Day Cavaliers, and lost a hard fought game 27 - 18.  The Vikings kept the game close all night despite playing a larger Calvary team and being without 2 way starter Keon King for the second half.

Treutlen would put Calvary in business early when a muffed punt gave Calvary the ball on the Treutlen 15 yard line.  The Viking defense stripped the ball away from Calvary running back Robert Heyward on the 3 yard line but as luck would have it Cavalier Milan Richardson fell on it in the end zone for the touchdown before the Viking defense could recover it.  Treutlen would answer immediately as Drew Gillis took the next kickoff 96 yards for a Viking touchdown.  The PAT was blocked and Treutlen would trail 7 - 6 with 9:13 left in the first quarter.

Calvary QB Jake Clemens would score on a 12 yard run to cap a 62 yard drive with 2:23 to go in the first to extend their lead to 14 - 6.  The Vikings would answer on the next drive and score on a 4 yard strike from Matthew Powell to Drew Gillis with no time on the clock before the half.  The 2 point conversion try would fail and the Vikes trailed going into halftime 14 - 12.  The drive would prove costly though as a flagrant late hit by 2 Cav defenders would shove Viking running back Keon King into the Treutlen bench.  He was taken to Memorial Hospital to be checked out and was released immediately following the game.

Both defenses would take over for most of the third quarter until Calvary running back Derek Kirkland would score on a 1 yard run with 1:25 left.  A 2 point conversion attempt by Calvary was thwarted by the Vikings leaving the score at 20 - 12 Calvary at the end of three quarters.  Calvary would extend their lead on a 4 yard run by running back Robert Heyward and a successful PAT to make the lead 27 - 12 with 6:06 to go in the game.  With no quit in them, the Vikings would score with 54 ticks left in the game as Matthew Powell found Drew Gillis again for a 3 yard reception.  The 2 point conversion would fail as well as the upcoming onside kick and the night would end with Calvary Day victorious, 27 - 18.

The Vikings will return to Savannah again next week to take on the Savannah Country Day Hornets.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 and can be heard on Sweet Onion Country 101.7
