September 18--  The Georgia State Golf Association posted this article on it's blog today regarding this weekend's LPGA golf tournament in Vidalia.

"Atlanta is all abuzz with the TOUR Championship in town this week, but did you know there is another professional tournament taking place in Georgia right now as well? Down in the southern part of the state, the Symetra Tour’s Vidalia Championship is going on at one of our fine GSGA Member Clubs, Hawk’s Point Golf Club. Known as the “Road to the LPGA,” the Symetra Tour showcases the latest crop of female professionals and has produced numerous LPGA Tour success stories since 1999.

Hawk’s Point is hosting the Vidalia Championship for the second year. Sydnee Michaels captured the inaugural title in 2011 with a score of 9 under par. This weekend’s event features a purse of $110,000 and, in looking over the field list, I see the names of several golfers who were playing in GSGA amateur competitions not too long ago — Katie Burnett of Brunswick, Susan Martin of Norcross, Ashley Medders-Barnes of Alma and Kendall Wright of Sugar Hill. The Vidalia Championship has also invited amateur Mary Ellen Shuman of St. Simons Island to compete. Mary Ellen is a high school senior at Frederica Academy who has verbally committed to UGA. Good luck to all our Georgians competing in the Championship!

The Symetra Tour’s top 10 money winners at the end of each season earn LPGA Tour membership, and Symetra Tour alums have accounted for 39 major championships in the “big league.” Bottom line, these ladies are good! Check them out this weekend in Vidalia! For more information on the tournament, visit Hawk’s Point or Symetra Tour on the web."
