Vikings Come on Strong in Second Half for Win
Friday, 14 September 2012

September 14--  After trailing by 1 at halftime, the Treutlen Vikings took control in the second half to pull away with a 27 - 7 victory over the Strong Rock Christian Patriots to pick up their first win of the year.  Despite numerous penalties, mental mistakes, and 2 punt returns for touchdowns being called back for penalties, the Vikings settled down to pull out the victory.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard first with 7:40 left in the first quarter when Senior running back Keon King went off right tackle for a 74 yard touchdown run.  The PAT was partially blocked and the Vikings had the early 6 - 0 lead.  Strong Rock would answer in the second quarter with a 16 play 76 yard drive capped by a 1 yard run by QB Zack Moss.  The PAT was good and the Patriots led at the half 7 - 6.

The Treutlen defense held Strong Rock on their first possession of the second half forcing a punt and then promptly went on a 10 play 79 yard drive to take the lead.  Junior QB Matthew Powell scored on a 7 yard run and then converted on the 2 point conversion on a pass to Drew Gillis for the 14 - 7 lead with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter.  The Viking defense would put the brakes on the Strong Rock rushing attack again and the offense would answer when QB Matthew Powell hit Drew Gillis on a 31 yard TD reception.  Filling in for the injured Austin Daughtry, Sophomore Kicker Nathan Drake hit the extra point through the uprights and the Vikings led more comfortably, 21 - 7 with 6:10 remaining in the game.

With Strong Rock down by 2 scores and time running out they got out of the comfort zone of their rushing attack and went to the air only to be intercepted by Junior defensive back Swatavious Hooks where he returned it to the Patriot 10 yard line.  Junior RB Jaeron Wise would ice the cake with a touchdown run of 7 yards with 1:02 left to give the Vikings the 27 - 7 victory.

The Vikings hit the road to Savannah next Friday to take on the Calvary Day Cavaliers with kickoff set for 7:30.  Be sure to catch all the action on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM.
