September 4--The Vidalia Indians Cross Country teams kicked off their season by participating in the Bleckley County Cross Country Classic on Saturday morning, September1.  The annual event hosts schools from all classifications and initiates runners into the season with a "short" two mile course.  The high heat and humidity of Saturday morning just added to the experience.  The Vidalia Indians' team has 16 male runners this year which is quite a large number for our area.  Trace Calloway, a returning senior, placed 16th overall and received a medal for his efforts.  He completed the two mile course in 12:29.  Will Harn, new to cross country this season, was the 2nd runner in for Vidalia with a time of 13:20.  Robert Petty, also new to the sport, was 3rd for the Indians in 13:51.  Michael Joiner, a veteran runner, and Carson Cato, another one new to the sport, came in 4th and 5th places respectively with a time of 14:15.  The rest of the team finished in the following order:

McKenly Corbitt (14:44), Greg Johnson (14:59), Ben Everett (15:06), Dalton Scott (16:11), Sterling James (16:58), Drew Powers (17:19), Frank Lopez (18:03), Jake Everett (18:32), and Chason Collins (19:06).  Coach Terri Humphrey reflects on the team's performance, "I am really proud of this group of guys.  This race was just a chance for us to experience a large field of runners (over 200 male runners participated), learn how to run when nerves are an issue, and run on a difficult course.  The guys did everything I asked them to do.  I am really excited to have such a large group this year.  I think you will see a different group of leaders each week.  They have great work ethic and seem to really push each other to do well. I look forward to a great season."

The lady Indians are fielding a team this year since they have the requisite number of five runners.  Leading the way in Bleckley's Classic was senior Kimberly Warren.  Kimberly is also new to the sport of cross country and has made her presence as the "lead" runner so far.  Kimberly finished in 18:15.  Freshman Jenna Wheeler was right behind her in 18:22, finishing as the 2nd lady Indian.  Katelyn Achenbach, a returning runner from last year, was 3rd for the ladies with a time of 21:40.  Freshman Abbie Chesser was the fourth finisher for the Indians with a time of 22:26, and Carolina Thigpen finished in 23:13.  "It is great to have enough ladies to field a team this year.  This race was a chance for us to see what it takes to compete at this level.  Out of the 5 runners, two are freshman and two are new to the sport, so we have a lot of learning to do.  This is a great group of girls who aren't afraid to work hard.  I am lucky to have them on my team," says Coach Humphrey.

The Indians will travel to Tattnall County on Thursday, September 6, for the first true meet of the season: a 3.1 mile course.  The Indian teams also host a 5k race on Saturday, September 8, at 6:00 pm.  This race is open to the public and will be run on the VHS cross country course at Vidalia High School.  Please support the Indians cross country teams with your participation.
