Monday, 13 August 2012

August 13-- Out of 140 nominated senior cheerleaders in Georgia, two VHS young ladies were chosen for GCCA's (Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association) Top 40 Cheerleaders of the Year. Alyssia McCloud and Chandler Williams were selected and recognized for excellence in the sport of cheerleading. During the application process, certain criteria is considered: GPA, SAT/ACT score, class rank, school & community activities & involvement, athletic participation, and letters of recommendation. On Saturday, August 11, the top 40 participated in an interview and performance portion held at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Each cheerleader was interviewed and evaluated on a 2 minute performance routine showing jumps, tumbling, and/or stunting. The cheerleaders were also evaluated on their dance, cheer, voice projection, and motions. After Saturday's events, 16 cheerleaders were chosen for the All State Team. Alyssia McCloud of VHS was named as part of the Top 16 All State Team. In November, the top 2 cheerleaders of the 16 will be named at the State Cheer Competition and will receive scholarships. Not since 2004 has VHS had a cheerleader make GCCA's top 40. Coach Toole says "it's an honor to have both Chandler and Alyssia to make the top 40", "both girls were standouts in this past weekends competition and represented the Indians well."
