Monday, 09 January 2012

The Vidalia Wresting team was seeded seventh in the Region 2AA Dual Team Tournament.  The Indians goal was to win one match so they could wrestle an extra match on the weekend.  The Indians lost to Pierce County, the number two seed, by 39 to 36.  Even though the Indians won seven of the eleven matches they wrestled, the eighteen points they gave up on forfeits cost them in the end.  Dropping into the consolation bracket, the Indians next had to face Brantley County who they lost to earlier in the season.  The Indians defeated Brantley County 44 to 33.  The Indians were down 9 to 21 after the first six matches.  With their weekend nearing an end the Indians turn the momentum and won six of the last eight matches.  Riding the momentum of their recent win, the Indians defeated Jeff Davis 35 to 34.  The Indians found themselves down 12 to 24 with only seven matches to go.  The Indians struck again and won five of the last seven matches.  The match that saved the win was Trayvon Simpson preserving one team point by only being defeated by technical fall instead of being pinned.  The win set up a rematch with Pierce County in the Region Consolation Finals.  Vidalia bumped their lower weights up one weight class to change their attack.  This time the Indians trailed only once by three points.  The rest of the match Vidalia dominated.  The Final score was 41 to 38, Vidalia forfeited the last two matches knowing Pierce could not catch them.  Having third place soundly in hand, the Indians challenged Appling County for second place and a chance to go the State Dual Championship with Region 2AA Champion Toombs County.  Vidalia did not fair well against Appling losing 21 to 48.  Results of the individual matches were; Tevin Tolbert 4 – 1, Jerry Clark 2 – 0, Michael Joiner 2 – 2, Tyler Campbell 3 – 1, Trayvon Simpson 1 – 3, Darnell Hendley 3 – 2, Fondanious Bostic 1 – 4, Solomon McLeod 3 – 2, Jacob Copeland 5 – 0, Daniel Copeland 3 – 2, Shakeem Lassiter 4 – 1, Kyle Gasper 2 – 2, Javon Jackson 1 – 0.  Jacob Copeland commented, “It was great to have a day when every member of our team contributed.  This was one of the best days I can remember while wrestling.
