November 25--  As we do our holiday shopping in the Vidalia area this year, we'll see and hear opportunuties to help those less fortunate via Red Kettles and Angel Trees from the Salvation Army.

ImageThe first kettles to deploy this year were Wednesday morning at Harvey's Supermarket where Cub Scouts from Pack 933 led by 4th grader K.T. Allen from Mount Vernon were ringing the bell to attract donations from shoppers.  He's accompanied by his friend Lavaris Kimble from Telfair Middle School.

Deloris Brown from the Salvation Army says they depend on holiday shoppers to make Christmas possible for many who are hurting this year because of higher prices and the bad economy.

"A lot of people have been coming in needing assistance.  A lot of agencies like Concerted Services didn't get the funding so that made us double up.  We really need the help of the community to meet the need here," she says.

"Many of the elderly are on fixed incomes and they're complaining about high utility bills because they can't pay the bill and buy food and clothing.  That's the biggest thing, the economy," Brown reports.

Salvation Army kettles are being placed at Harveys, Big Lots, Goodies and Walmart.  You'll also find Angel Trees at Goodies and Walmart with the names of children for whom to shop.  Salvation Army Director Sandy Roberts and Goody's Manager John Lara are shown at the store's Angel Tree.
