Down To Two Tournaments, Players Will Make Charge This Week In Vidalia
Monday, 22 August 2011

Only two tournaments remain in the 2011 LPGA Futures Tour season and competition is guaranteed to be intense this week as the tour heads to Vidalia for the inaugural Vidalia Championship.
The Vidalia Championship is set for Friday through Sunday (Aug. 26-28) at Hawk’s Point Golf Club. The event’s $110,000 purse will award $15,400 to the tournament winner after three days of competition.
Nine of the top-10 players on the current money list will be in Vidalia making a charge this week, hoping to move into position to ultimately finish in the top 10 for the “J Golf Race For The Card.” That money-list race awards 2012 LPGA Tour membership to the top-10 money winners by season’s end. The top five finishers will earn full 2012 LPGA status.
Currently, a total of $4,418 separates the No. 5 and No. 6 money winners. Hoping to crack into the top 10, Sophia Sheridan of Guadalajara, Mexico, currently ranked 11th, trails No. 10 Leah Wigger of Louisville, Ky., by $1,115.
A mere $106 separates No. 8 Jenny Gleason of Clearwater, Fla., from No. 9 Dawn Shockley of Estes Park, Colo., making this week’s finish extremely important as the dollars add up and the rounds count down to the season-ending tournament next month in Albany, N.Y.
This week’s money-list charge will be led by two-time tournament winners Kathleen Ekey of Sharon Township, Ohio, and Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

In addition to Ekey and Ferrero, other 2011 tournament winners playing in the Vidalia Championship are: Mo Martin of Altadena, Calif.; Valentine Derrey of Paris, France; Brittany Johnston of Akron, Ohio; Stephanie Kim of Bayside, N.Y.; Tzu-Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei; and Cathryn Bristow of Auckland, New Zealand. Those players will also be gunning for the top spots on the money list.

The latest tournament winner in the field from the recent Eagle Classic in Richmond, Va., is Mo Martin of California. Martin’s win in Virginia was her third career victory on the LPGA Futures Tour and it moved her from No. 5 to No. 3 on the season money list.
Also in the tournament field this week is University of Georgia Bulldog Emilie Burger of Braselton, Ga., who earned the amateur exemption through a qualifying tournament against five other golfers. Burger carded a round of 75 in the qualifying event.
Two former University of Georgia collegians also will compete in Vidalia. Georgia native Garrett Phillips of St. Simons Island, and Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky., will bring their Bulldog spirit to Vidalia this week.
Ashley Medders of Alma, Ga., who played collegiately at the University of Arkansas, also will be in the field.
A free junior golf clinic for the first 40 youngsters is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The junior clinic will be held on the driving range at Hawk’s Point Golf Club.

Also during tournament week, pro-am tournaments will be held on Wednesday (August 24) and on Thursday (August 25). The pro-ams will start each day at 1:30 p.m.
LPGA Futures Tour members also play in a match-play tournament for cash each year that runs concurrently with the tour’s stroke-play tournaments. The “Last CHAMP Standing” Match-Play Contest moves into the “Final Four” this week in Vidalia. The event started with 16 eligible players who have worn CHAMP spikes in competition and qualified for the match-play event through a points system.
Players hold their matches during tournament-week practice rounds. Match winners have advanced into the “Final 4,” featuring two semifinal 18-hole matches this week in Vidalia. The two semifinal winners will advance into the championship, set for early in the week at the Tour’s final tournament in Albany, N.Y. Winner of the “Last CHAMP Standing” contest earns $2,500 cash.
One other special event will be held this Thursday in Vidalia, featuring the “Sun Mountain Skills Challenge Finals” at Hawk’s Point Golf Club. Several Futures Tour players will compete in a “Big Break-style” set of skill challenges at this event.
Players qualify for the Sun Mountain Skills Summit by wearing Sun Mountain outerwear or using a Sun Mountain golf bag during competitive rounds leading up to the finals. Points are awarded for each round played using the company’s products, with bonus points awarded for finishing in the top 10 in each official tournament. MEDIA: This is a very “visual” competition and could offer some interesting video or still-photography images for your media outlets as players attempt to hit shots over and around large obstacles. Bring your cameras!

General admission for the tournament is $10 at the gate or $25 for all three days. For more information, visit hawkspointgolfclub.com.
