Tournament Time in Vidalia
Sunday, 21 August 2011

August 22--  Nearly two years after a multimillion dollar makeover, Hawks Point Golf Club in Vidalia is doing something no other course in a community this size has ever done in southeast Georgia.

This week Hawk's Point is hosting a professional golf tournament with a $110,000 purse and women golfers who are members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association Futures Tour.

"It's a chance for members of the community to see up and coming women golfers.  These are players from 35 countries and 40 states in the United States.  Their average age is 25 starting with age seventeen and on up.  Early in the week you can see them practice and get autographs and pictures and all that, and once they start playing on Friday it's game on," says Lisa Mickey from the Tour Headquarters near Daytona.

The women will have practice rounds through Tuesday and take part in scheduled Pro-Ams Wednesday and Thursday with the 54-hole tournament starting Friday. The top ten players on the money list this year get a chance to play on the LPGA tour.

"It just so happens that Vidalia is the second to last tournament so there's a lot on the line.  The players are playing to win LPGA tour cards for 2012 and the race for the cards is getting pretty hot," Mickey says.

Many of the players are staying in private homes and volunteers have signed up to help with the tournament.  "People in Georgia are golfers and they understand the game.  We hope golf fans will come out and support the players and support the event.  We know they know golf and it's their event in their home town and we hope people will embrace it and make it their own," Mickey states.
