Kathleen Ekey Wins Golf Classic Presented by Wegmans

SYRACUSE, N.Y.,
July 31, 2011
All eyes were on Kathleen Ekey during Sunday’s final round as the large crowds watched the Sharon Township, Ohio native win the Alliance Bank Golf Classic Presented by Wegmans.

With her second victory of the 2011 LPGA Futures Tour season, Ekey extends her lead in the J Golf Race for the Card and is one step closer to achieving her dream of playing on the LPGA Futures Tour.

“I’m just so blessed, not many people in this world can say they got to do what they have dreamed of since they can remember,” said Ekey following her final round. “It is really exciting to have that right on your doorstep.”

Ekey carded rounds of 68-68-69 for an eight-under par 205 total.

The University of Alabama graduate began the day with an eagle on the par-5 second hole but faltered a bit down the stretch recording a double-bogey on 16 and bogey on 18 at the par-71 Drumlins Country Club, East Course.

“I just hit a bad tee-shot on 18,” said Ekey. “I hit a good bunker shot there and I told my dad that was the best putt I hit all day, it just didn’t break.”

Ekey began the final round with a one-stroke lead but was unstoppable on Sunday as she went on to earn a three-stroke victory over the 2009 Alliance Bank Golf Classic Presented by Wegmans champion, Jenni Suh.

“War Eagle” reigned out in the crowd as the two former University of Alabama golf teammates finished first and second for the first time since they turned professional.

Suh, a rookie on this year’s LPGA Futures Tour, played steady golf in Sunday’s final round carding three birdies and one bogey en route to a one-under par 70. The runner-up finish is Suh’s best finish in this year’s LPGA Futures Tour season.

Finishing in a tie for third at four-under par were Stephanie Connelley, Dawn Shockley, LPGA Tour member Allison Hanna, and two-time LPGA Futures Tour winner Lisa Ferrero.

Play was suspended at 3:56 p.m. EDT due to lightning and resumed at 4:28 p.m. EDT.
