Area Unemployment UP From Last Year

May 26--  The unemployment rate in the nine-county Vidalia trade area in April was higher than the statewide rate and higher than a year ago, according to figures released by the Georgia Department of Labor.

While the Labor Department reports a decrease of one-tenth of one percent in the unemployment rate, the rate of 9.6 percent is lower than all of the counties in this area.

In the region, nearly 500 more people were out of work in April of this year than in April, 2011.

Jeff Davis County has the highest enemployment rate at 13.5 percent.  Nearly 1,500 people are unemployed in Toombs County which has an unemployment rate of 10.9 percent, more than one percent higher than the state rate.
