May 19--  Two longtime friends are the top students this year in the graduating class at Vidalia High School.

Valedictorian Omid Mirzkhani (L) and Salutatoriam Ben DeVore

Omid Mirzkhani is the class valedictorian with the highest grade point average during four years of high school.

"I'm really excited about that achievement.  A lot of people say you're valedictorian, that's great, you're salutatorian, that's great, but we're really no different from anyone else.  It just happened that we worked a little bit harder and got higher grades, but I feel the same as anybody else and I'm happy to be here," Omid says.

Omid has been studying on the campus of Georgia Southern this year and ultimately plans on an engineering degree from Georgia Tech.

He's also a former member of the Vidalia High School tennis team where he and the salutatorian, Ben DeVore, were teammates.

Ben says, "Before we started competing for grades, we started competing in tennis, and he usually beat me then, too."

Ben is the first graduate of Vidalia High School to be accepted at Harvard where he's planning on studying international law.

"It's crazy.  I don't even know what to say about it.  I was in shock and couldn't speak when I got accepted.  My parents had to get the email and read it themselves because I couldn't speak for a few minutes after I got because I was so surprised," he said.
