Toombs Chairman Pleased
Thursday, 30 December 2010

December 30--  Halfway through his first term in office, Toombs Commission Chairman Buddy West is pleased as the county wraps up 2010.

ImageFor the first time in a long time, the county is not borrowing money to make it through December.  West believes that's because county manager Doug Eaves has brought a more business-like approach to county management.

"We continue to look and make adjustments.  We bid out insurance, banking and accounting and have been looking at what we can do to be good stewards.  That's something we're proud of and we did not raise taxes,"West says.

In 2010, the county further expanded its landfull, bought ten new vehicles for the sheriff's department, and opened two more convenience centers to replace unsightly dumpster sites.

In the coming year, county residents will have another trash option.  "We just renewed our contract with Sullivan and what they are going to do is offer county-wide curbside pickup at a reasonable price as an option, it's not mandatory, but it's an option," the chairman points out.

Chairman West reports receipt of grant money to buy two new county ambulances and says four new county roads will be resurfaced by this Summer including two miles on the Lyons-Center Road, Thompson Pond Road, Winge Road and Cadillac Drive.  The county is also assisting the city of Lyons with financing improvements on Bulldog Road near Toombs County High School.

West is also pleased with plans by the county Board of Elections to conduct city elections for Vidalia and Lyons in the future.  "That is a win-win because of instead of having to train three groups of people to hold elections, you only have to train one," he says.

And unlike this year, there are no employee furlough days planned for 2011.
