More Jobs for Toombs Area

December 28--  Local economic development officials signed the papers Tuesday to bring a pet food company to Toombs County.

Bill Mitchell with the Toombs County Development Authority says U.S. Pets Nutrition LLC plans to make a $25 million capital investment and bring at least 150 jobs to the Toombs County area.

The company is a subsidiary of Thai Union Frozen Products which also owns the Chicken of the Sea plant in the Toombs Corporate Center on U.S. One north of Lyons.  U.S. Pets is being co-located in the Chicken of the Sea building and has first refusal to buy an adjacent 100,000 square foot "spec" building.

Mitchell expects manufacturing will start in four to six months after the company secures state environmental approval for treatment of waste water from the plant.

The company has signed a ten-year lease through the Development Authority for 300 acres of land behind the industrial park to be used as a spray field for the waste water.  It's paying Billy Wilson of Toombs County $3,300 an acre as part of the lease-to-purchase agreement.

According to Mitchell, "They will produce a blended upscale pet food and will also have their research kitchens and quality control kitchens located in Toombs County.  They are modifying the existing Chicken of the Sea building now with plans to have their own building within a couple of years."

"I think it's an excellent way to finish this year and to start the new year with expectations that we will sell another building," Mitched noted.
