December 10--  The Toombs County school system bade farewell to four school board members at its meeting Thursday night including outgoing board chairman Danny Bowen.

Danny Bowen (R) accepts plaque of appreciation from Toombs County School Superintendent Dr. Kendall Brantley.

"I appreciate the opportunity.  I've enjoyed my service and I've tried to facilitate the people who are professionals in this field.  I think that's the role of a board member.  I hope the school system continues to improve and thrives under new leadership," Bowen said.

Bowen is completing 24 years on the school board and says he is proud that the board has kept school taxes among the lowest in the state.  However, that may not hold up in the future.

Board member Duane Tomlin warns that next fiscal year could force the board to make staff cuts or raise taxes because of additional cuts in the state education budget.

Bowen says he's afraid Tomlin may be right.  "I'm afraid the worst is yet to come.  I hope I'm wrong and that the state economy improves so the state can support public education to the extent it deserves, but it doesn't look good at this point.  We've undergone a couple of million dollars in state cuts over the past two years and I don't know how much further we can go," he observes.

The school system also recognized outgoing board members Needum Rogers, Luther Caraway and Robert Rozier and honored Margaret Redmon as the Special Education Teacher of the Year.

In other actions, the board approved an architect to start design work on a new Toombs County High School building and okayed the purchase of three new school buses.

The board will meet again Monday night at six to hold a fair dismissal hearing for former Lyons Primary School principal Tim Young.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission met Thursday in Atlanta and voted to investigate allegations of misconduct against both Young and former Toombs Central Elementary school principal Dr. Renee Stanley.
