Tuesday, 07 December 2010

December 7--  Governor Sonny Perdue, in consultation with Governor-elect Nathan Deal, today announced that State Rep. Mark Williams of Jesup is their recommended choice to succeed Chris Clark as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

“Mark Williams is a true servant of the people and his unique background gives him the tools needed to lead our efforts to manage and preserve Georgia’s natural resources,” said Governor Perdue. “Mark has dedicated much of his public service to this work and I am proud to recommend him as the next Commissioner of DNR.”

Under state law, the DNR Board appoints the Commissioner with the approval of the Governor. The board is set to consider the nomination of Rep. Williams this week.

“I am extremely honored to be nominated,” Rep. Williams said. “With a background in Biology and a love for the outdoors I look forward to serving the people of Georgia in managing our unmatched natural resources.”

Governor-elect Deal voiced his confidence in Rep. Williams, adding: “Mark has the background we need at the top of the Department of Natural Resources. As a member of the state House, he served on both the Natural Resources and the Game and Fish committees. He’s dedicated to assuring the responsible use of Georgia’s natural treasures so we can enjoy them today and preserve them for future generations.”

Williams is a successful businessman and former school teacher. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Georgia College and State University and proudly served our country in the Army National Guard throughout college before working his way up to 1st Lieutenant at only 22 years of age.  Married for more than 18 years, Mark and Pam Williams have two daughters, Mary Katelyn and Miranda, and are members of Unity Church of God in Jesup.
