United Way Exceeds Goal
Monday, 15 November 2010

November 15-- In one of the nation's toughest economic times since the Great Depresssion, United Way campaign officials for Toombs, Montgomery and Wheeler Counties were "wary" to say the least when they set this year's campaign goal at $510,000.

Friday they were exhuberant when the final figures were tallied and announced at the Victory Celebration luncheon Friday at the Lyons First Baptist Church.

Campign chairperson Jennifer Evans says she was worried right up until the final day that the goal may not be reached.  "I think every company and every division we were talking to said they just didn't have as much this year. i was really nervous.  Up until Wednesday evening, we were short $35,000 and yesterday it kept creeping up and even until people were getting their food today we still had money coming in," she said.

United Way executive director Patricia Dixon says the money will help 23 social service agencies serve people in the three counties.  "We're going to be able to help people from little kids all the way up to senior adults in so many different ways, it's going to make a huge difference," Dixon noted.
