Bank Shooting
Wednesday, 27 October 2010

October 27--  An early morning attempted bank robbery has left one bank employee shot and another assaulted.

Vidalia Police Major Roger Callaway said the armed robbery attempt happened early Wednesday at Altamaha Bank and Trust on Highway 280 West in Vidalia.

"Apparently an assailant had broken into the bank and when employees showed up to start their business day early, he was waiting on them.  He told them he wanted the safe open so he could get money, and when they told him they couldn't open it because of time locks, he shot one of them and assaulted the other.

Employee Brent Sammons was hit in the head and shot in the legs.  The other employee, Matt Mead, was hit by the robber but not seriously injured, according to police.  Sammons was taken to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia for treatment.

Major Callaway says the robber escaped in Mead's truck which was later found on Highway 135 a few miles south of the Highway 280 intersection.  A manhunt ensued and tracker dogs are being used to find the suspect whom Callaway describes as "a black male wearing camouflage clothing."

If you have information about this case, you are asked to call Vidalia Police or the Montgomery County Sheriff's office.  Both the GBI and the FBI are assisting with the investigation.
