Relay for Life Organizing

October 22--  The 2011 Toombs/Treutlen Relay for Life Campaign, sponsored by Meadows Regional Medical Center, kicked off at the Meadows Wellness Center in Vidalia, one month earlier than last year.  With a date set for April 1, 2011 the Relay Teams have less than six months to prepare for the Relay for Life walk-a-thon on Buck Cravey Field at Vidalia High School.
According to Relay for Life Chairman, Chester Proctor, "we are starting earlier for two reasons.  Number one, we have pushed the Relay event two weeks earlier so it won't fall the weekend before the Onion Festival and the other reason is to allow ample time for the relay teams to raise money, hold special team events, and be prepared for the event."
The last few years the Relay for Life has ended at midnight, but this year, Proctor says it will begin at 7pm Friday and wrap up at 7am Saturday morning.  "We are looking for a full night of fun, entertainment, and walking for a cure.  Each team will have at least one person walking throughout the event, with the exception of the luminary service which takes place in complete darkness."
Another new twist to this year's event is the addition of the Treutlen Relay for Life.  According to Proctor, the American Cancer Society has restructured some of the events this year and combined the Toombs and Treutlen relay's.  Proctor says, "the committee and I look forward to working with the committee from Treutlen and welcome all of their teams and survivors to take part in this event."
