Senator Hill Will Vote For Deal
Monday, 11 October 2010

October 11--  State Senator Jack Hill of Reidsville says he will vote for Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal, but says former governor Roy Barnes can run the state, too.

Hill spoke to the Toombs County Retired Educators Association last week and gave a bleak assessment of the state's budget situation in fiscal year 2012.  The state was able to use federal economic recovery funds this fiscal year to make ends meet, but those funds are not expected to be available again.

"If you look at the growth in K-12 and the other formula-funded programs, that growth will just about take up the amount of growth we expect in revenues.  That leaves about a $1.3 billion hole in the budget and I don't know anyone who has an airtight plan to meet that requirement," Senator Hill says.

Senator Hill also cautions voters to be wary of election year promises which involved increased spending by the state.  "No promise that involves spending new money is a promise that can be kept in this coming year," he noted.

Senator Hill, who has served in the legislature as both a Democrat and a Republican, is supporting fellow Republican Nathan Deal for governor.  "To be completely fair, I would say the two candidates who running for governor are both fully capable of running the state.  I've known Nathan Deal since my early days in the legislature and have found him to be one of the most reliable and steady individuals I've had the knowledge of working with, but I certainly understand those who support Governor Barnes and I don't for a minute think that he couldn't run the state," he says.
