Looking for Jobs
Thursday, 30 September 2010

September 30--  Area employers and job-seekers showed up for a job fair at Southeastern Tech in Vidalia Thursday.

With the area unemployment rate running above ten percent, many laid-off people are seeking work. One mother at the job fair says her 23-year-old son has been laid off and is having a tough time.  "He hasn't been successful lately.  He's been going around to several areas but hasn't had any success.  It's very tough," she says.

However, if you're qualified, some local companies are hiring.  Joel Grier with Rivers Air Conditioning and Electric in Vidalia is taking applications.  "We like for them to have a good work ethic and we have to follow rules from the EPA and they have to be certified.  The trades are not attracting young people like they were at one time, but air conditioning is going to be around for a long time and people are going to need it, so that's money," he says.

Another option is hiring out as a temporary worker.  Linda Shannon from a Dublin employment firm says many companies are finding "temps" a good workforce solution.

"It's a good way for them to try them before they hire them and then they are not obligated to them for unemployment, so I can see it being an advantage to both, and we are gettng a lot more applicants," she says.
