September 29--  Here's a quick summary of news in our area.

Murchison's Closing...One of the oldest businesses in Vidalia is closing its doors.  Murchison Funeral Home is closing due to what its parent company calls "the changing business environment."

The funeral home was started in 1906 by the father of Mr. Will Murchison and remained locally owned until sold to a Canadian firm in 1994. Later the Canadian company, Loewen Group International, was bought by Texas-based Service Corporation International for $1.2 billion. SCI is the largest operator of funeral homes in the United States.

Fire at Family Dollar Store... A small blaze in the store room at the Family Dollar Store in Vidalia caused some excitement but no serious damage Tuesday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Buddy Coleman.  Smoke from the fire entered stores on either side of the Family Dollar Store which is located in the Bi-Lo Shopping Center.

ICE Roundup Nabs One in Toombs Co... U.S. Immigration agents rounded up 32 illegal immigrants in a four-day roundup in Georgia last week.  Some had prior criminal convictions, some had been deported and returned and others had ignored deportation orders.  Officials say one of those picked up was a male from Guatemala living in Toombs County.  They refused to release his name or the nature of the charges against him.

Air Evac Opening in Statesboro... Air Evac Lifestream is opening its sixth base in Georgia.  The company opened a new base in Vidalia earlier this year and announced Wednesday it is opening a new base at the Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport.  The company's medivac helicopters are also based in Waycross, Brunswick, Columbus and Cordele.  Nationwide it has 95 bases.

Vidalian Named to Leadership Georgia... The Human Resources Director at Dot Foods in Vidalia has been selected for Leadership Georgia.  Jennifer Evans will join other young leaders in Georgia in the statewide leadership development program operated by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
