Academic Excellence at JRT

September 27--  The Vidalia school board got good news about the academic program at J.R. Trippe Middle School at its meeting last week.

Principal Gwen Warren is proud of the school's record.  "We're very proud that our school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for six consecutive years.  That's a huge accomplishment because every year its gets harder, and this is the fifth year in a row we've been recognized as a Title 1 Distinguished School.  Sixty-one percent of our children are economically disadvantaged and for us to have those kind of results serving all children speaks volumes for the work that is being done here at the school," she says.

The principal also says she has some concerns.  "We've had a couple of programs that have gone by the wayside due to lack of funds.  One of those was our after-school tutoring program and we used to offer summer school to help our eighth graders who didn't pass the CRCT the first time.  Also, we lost five teaching positions last year and another part of a teaching position this year.  So, larger class sizes, fewer teachers and loss of those extra programs are a big concern to us," Warren observes.
