Municipalities Get Infrastructure Funds

September 7--  Eight area towns are receiving federal funds to help with infrastructure improvements.

Governor Sonny Perdue announced award of Community Development Block Grants to 75 communities around the state.

In our area, the city of Lyons is receiving $500,000 to make drainage and street improvements.  The town of Santa Claus gets $500,000 to help it connect sewer lines to the city of Lyons sewage treatment plant.

Other $500,000 grants for sewer work are being awarded to Glenwood, Hazlehurst and Swainsboro.  The city of Collins is receiving $450,827 for sewer, Baxley gets $470,538 for street repairs and Dublin has $200,066 for water improvements.

A $500,000 request from the city of Vidalia to help build a facility for the Mercy Medical Clinic was not approved.  Vidalia city manager Bill Torrance says the application will be re-submitted.  Mercy Medical Clinic provides free medical care for unemployed and low income residents in the area.
