Toombs Jobless Rate High
Monday, 06 September 2010

September 6--  The jobless rate in Toombs County is higher than the state and national unemployment rates, according to Monty Craft, District Manager for the Georgia Department of Labor.

"Right night Toombs County is 10.2% which is a little higher than the Georgia unemployment rate which is 9.9% and a little higher than the national rate of 9.5%," Craft reports.

Because of the unemployment rate, Craft says the Department of Labor office in Vidalia continues to see an increase in unemployment claims.  "Our August numbers haven't been released yet, but for July we had approximately 99 more claims filed than we had in June, and I expect similar numbers in August," he says.

If you're looking for a job, Craft says there are current openings for 85 jobs in Toombs County.  "We don't have employers hiring a huge number of employees, but there is a variety of skill jobs which are out there," he says.

Because more people are looking for jobs now, Craft says it's important to do your homework when applying for work.  "The first thing is to research the company, know what job you are applying for and be prepared for the interview," he advises.

The Labor Department provides a variety of workshops to help people with the job application process.
