Housing Authority Director Retiring
Tuesday, 31 August 2010

August 31--  The Director of the Vidalia Housing Authority is retiring after 17 years on the job.

Robert Kelly's tenure has been highlighted by securing over $8 million to remodel all of the authority's 110 housing units.

"The proudest thing I am is that we've basically rebuilt everything in the Housing Authority.  We've been able to get the grant money to do that to get these apartments in the shape they are in," Kelly says.

Hughes Threlkeld, the chairman of the Housing Authority Board, credits Kelly with making Vidalia's public housing a credit to the city, and he remembers it wasn't always that way.

"Bob came into a fairly rough situation.  We were an Authority that was classified in 'troubled status.'  In a few years, we were out of troubled status and have been a high performer pretty much ever since he took the reigns of the authority.  He's done an exceptional job," Threlkeld notes.

Kelly's successor is Vidalia resident Josh Beck who's been working for the Heart of Georgia Regional Development Commission.

"I think for the first year the biggest challenge will be to continue to move along the projects which Mr. Kelly has going.  Also, we'll continue to fight drugs and violence in the community and that's something we look forward to doing," Beck promises.

Kelly also bids farewell to the over 250 residents of the city's housing units.  "I've had tenants here longer than I've been here and they are some of the best tenants you could ask for," Kelly declares.
