August 23--  Each month the Vidalia Police Department provides the city council a statistical rundown of crime and the department's law enforcement activities.

Comparing the first seven months of this year to the same period of 2009, the figures show a mixed bag of crime in Vidalia so far in 2010 with an upswing in violent crime.

There has been one homicide in the city this year (same as last year), three rapes compared with none this time last year, and there have been eight more aggravated assaults than last year.

There have been 107 burglaries, down one from last year, and 14 armed robberies, down ten from last year.

The report shows 15 fewer cases of family violence and six fewer instances of assault and battery.

On the highways, the city has seen 466 accidents, 14 more than last year, and an increase in drunk driving, 16 more than previously.  At the same time, police have written slightly fewer traffic and warning tickets so far this year.

Patrol car fuel consumption is up about a thousand gallons while calls for service have increased by nearly by more than 1,500.
