Fire at David Emanuel Academy
Monday, 16 August 2010

August 16--  Students at David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore are out of class for the rest of this week after a weekend fire at the school.

Headmaster Marion Shaw says lightning Saturday afternoon hit a building on the campus which was built in 1904 and formerly was a military academy.  DEA used the building to house three classrooms and a lab on the first floor and a wrestling room and storage area on the second floor.

"It's a combination of a tragedy and a miracle.  It's a tragedy that the old building was destroyed by fire, but a miracle that it didn't go anywhere else.  I just got clearance from the Fire Marshall and we're going to start school back on Monday," Shaw reports.

Shaw credited local firemen with saving other buildings at DEA.  "It's amazing what the firefighters did between the Candler County, Stillmore and Emanuel County/Swainsboro firemen," he said.
