Don't Be Stupid, Buckle Up!
Monday, 16 August 2010

August 16--  Most teenage drivers and passengers in Toombs County are not buckling up.

Bonnie Brantley with the Toombs County Safe Kids Coalition conducts seatbelt surveys at area high schools. "Our percentages show they are not buckling up and we need to get them to buckle up so they'll be safe drivers," she says.

Brantley also has some sobering news.  Most people who are dead today from traffic accidents would be alive if only they had been wearing a seatbelt. "I don't know why they are not wearing them, and as parents, we need to be role models to encourage them to buckle up.  Our statistics show that 100% of the fatalities that happened in the last three years, none of them had their seat belts on," Brantley reports.

One person who got lucky in an accident is Helen Harris.  "I actually did not know what I had hit.  I saw another car and then realized I was bleeding badly.  I had hit the windshield and actually bubbled the windshield out because I didn't have my seatbelt on.  I have no idea why I didn't buckle up that morning, but it would have saved me and hour and forty minutes of stitching in my face because of the windshield injury that I had," she warns.

Helen learned the hard way, and hopes you'll take her lesson to heart and buckle up, even if you're just going around the block.
