Johnson Welcomes Uphill Battle

June 25--  The former President ProTem of the Georgia Senate is hoping he'll get enough votes in the rest of Georgia to offset the Atlanta vote in the upcoming Republican primary election for governor.

Eric Johnson of Savannah was in Vidalia Wednesday night for a fundraiser after launching a TV campaign in the Atlanta market to increase his name recognition in the state's largest city.

"I'm the only candidate in the top tier who's ever run a business, I'm the only candidate in the top tier who's got a solid record of cutting taxes and balancing a budget, and I'm the only the candidate who's not from Atlanta.  Rediistricting next year will put even more legislative power in the Atlanta area, so having a Governor who understands there's another Georgia out there is important," he says.

Johnson describes himself as a Reagan conservative and believes the best way to get people back to work is to get government and red tape out of the way. "We need a tax code which encourages entreprenuers and not outsourcing, making Georgia the energy capitol of the Southeast with nuclear, safe offshore drilling and using our forest resources for ethanol, and rebuild our infrastructure by putting the hard hats back to work," he says.

Johnson also thinks he is the best Republican to beat former Governor Roy Barnes in the November general election.  "I'm the only candidate in this race who's gone toe-to-toe with Roy Barnes.  I was the Republican leader in the Senate the same four years he was Governor.  I fought him hard on critical issues and helped to topple the Barnes administration and elect the first Republican governor and the first Republican majority in the legislature in 130 years.
