Monday, 17 May 2010

May 17-- Brewton-Parker College held Commencement Ceremonies for the Class of 2010 Saturday on the Mount Vernon campus inside the Gillis Gym in the Snooks Student Activities Center.

During the ceremony, 178 students were presented for candidacy of 181 bachelors and/or associate degrees. Of those, 122 students have completed their degree’s requirements. Forty-five students have applied for summer graduation and were recognized during the ceremony.

Commencement speaker U.S. Congressman John Barrow (D-Georgia), 12th Congressional District, encouraged the graduates to reach out to their communities in ways that will make a difference in the long run: “Volunteer for a cause you care about. Things you thought were just hobbies could actually be a rewarding career. It is a great time to be an American and a great time to get involved in your community.”

Rep. Barrow added, “Remember the words John F. Kennedy spoke in my youth, ‘One person can make a difference and everyone should try’.”

There were also two special presentations of degrees. Rev. Don Moye, executive pastor of First Baptist Church of Vidalia, recognized his son Stephen Hudson Moye. Moye is a May graduate in the Bachelor of Arts program. Rev. Moye gave the ceremony’s invocation.

Derric Oliver, music minister of Providence Baptist Church of Chattahoochee Hills, Ga., presented his daughter, Kayla Dianne Oliver, with her Bachelor of Arts degree. She is an August graduate. Mr. Oliver gave the ceremony’s benediction.
