Treutlen Faces Teacher Layoffs
Monday, 17 May 2010

May 17--  Like school systems all over Georgia, Treutlen County schools are facing layoffs and furlough days next school term.

According to "The Soperton News," 13 teachers will lose their jobs in the new fiscal year and ten furlough days will be taken to save money.  The system is also eliminating driver education and is withdrawing from the Tri-County Alternative School.

Things could get worse in the future according to school superintendent Chuck Ellington.  Federal stimulus funds were used by the state to help make up for shortfalls in 2011, however, those funds will not be available in 2012.  Ellington says more cuts will be necessary if the revenue picture doesn't improve.
