Test Score Improvements in Vidalia

May 17--  Vidalia school system officials are generally pleased with results of the annual standardized testing for this year.  Members of the school board were briefed on the results at their May meeting.

"We're really excited that Sally Meadows Elementary that had low scores last year in math has really increased the number passing mathematics.  For example, in the 5th grade, last year only 66% passed and this year it went up to 82%," says curriculum director Lucy Claroni.

At the J.R. Trippe Middle School, "We have 95% of the students who passed both the reading and language arts portions of the CRCT," she says. Improved scores were also seen in math, science and social studies at J.R. Trippe, she reports.

On the Georgia High School Graduation Tests, the percentage of students passing English and math went up this year while there was a slight decline in the number passing the math test.  There was a significant decline in those passing social studies which Claronia attributes to a new standard included in this year's social studies test.

Compared to the state average on the graduation tests, 89% of VHS students passed the English test versus a state average of 90%; VHS students equalled the state average of 91% on the math test; they beat the state average of 90% in science with a 92% pass rate; and were 5% below in social studies with a 73% pass rate versus a 78% state average pass rate.
