May 13--  It's a long way from the onion fields of South Georgia to a Hollywood movie premiere, but that's where you'll find Vidalia Onions Sunday.

Vidalia Onion Marketer Wendy Brannen has teamed with producers of the next Shrek movie to use it as a vehicle for promoting the Sweet Vidalia Onion.

"I had a gentleman in Atlanta assist me in networking with the folks out in Hollywood setting up this new promotion with Dreamworks.  The name of the new movie is "Shrek Forever After," so our tag line is "Shrek Forever After, Vidalia Forever Sweet," she reports.  "It has widespread appeal to kids and their parents, so we're tapping into that existing purchasing power with the parents," Brannen says.

A wide array of materials tying Shrek and the Sweet Vidalia Onion is being used for the campaign.  Twelve tractor-trailer trucks loaded with promotional items are enroute to retailers nationwide, but Brannen says one of the most effective thus far is an online game.

"Our season opened April 27th and within one week we had 8,000 people log on to vidaliaonion.org and play our consumer contest," she says. 

The movie will be in theaters across the country starting May 21 and the Hollywood premiere is this weekend with Wendy and Vidalia Sweet Onions at the opening,

"The main thing I'm excited about with this is that Vidalia Onions are on the menu and will be served in Hollywood this weekend," she says.
