Montgomery Still Hopeful on Prison
Wednesday, 14 April 2010

April 14--  Montgomery County commissioners got some cautious words of hope regarding construction of a new detention center this week.

At their April meeting Monday, Joe Filippone of the county Development Authority and Mount Vernon Mayor Joey Fountain reported on a meeting they had in Atlanta with the private company which wants to build the private prison in Mount Vernon.

Filippone says the company's facility in Ocilla is nearing capacity.  That means the company needs more space.  Meanwhile, the company is negotiating to house federal detainees who would be housed in a new 500-bed facility in Mount Vernon.

Mayor Fountain says he hopes to get some good news in a couple of weeks.  The project has been in the works for several years but was derailed when the economy went south two years ago.
