Under Budget and Ahead of Schedule
Wednesday, 14 April 2010

April 14--  The newest school in Vidalia came in under budget and ahead of schedule.  Architect Mike Parker told the Vidalia school board Tuesday night the work at Sally Meadows Elementary School has been completed $20,000 less than budgeted and three months earlier than planned.  He credited McDonald Construction Company of Vidalia for success of the $10.2 million project.

School Superintendent Dr. Tim Smith says the second grade at J.D. Dickerson Primary School will move to the new SDM building after school is out this year.  When school starts back, Sally Meadows will include the second through fifth grades and Dickerson will have Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade.

Meanwhile, the school board has given "tentative" approval to next year's school calendar in Vidalia.  The board is waiting on the state legislature to approve the state education budget before finalizing the local calendar.  As it stands now, schools in Vidalia will start August 9th and end May 20, 2011.  If any adjustments have to be made, Dr. Smith says he expects the school year would be shortened next year due to budget shortfalls.
