November 3--  Joy Beckum from the Toombs County FFA provides the following.  Thanks, Joy.

The Toombs County FFA Alumni hosted their 1st Annual Sweet Onion Showdown Breeding Gilt/Market Hog Show on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Toombs County Agri-Center in Lyons.  The show was a huge success with over 100 entries from across southern Georgia.

The Overall Grand Champion Breeding Gilt was a Hampshire gilt owned and raised by Drew Tucker, a 4th grade student and member of the Ben Hill County 4-H.

The Overall Reserve Champion Gilt was a Spot gilt owned and raised by Shelbie Kendrick, a 12th grade student from Taylor County and member of the Taylor County 4-H.

In the Market Hog division, the Overall Grand Champion for the day was a gilt owned and raised by Russ Jones of Ben Hill County FFA.

The Overall Reserve Champion Market Hog was a barrow owned and raised by Brooks Edwards of Southeast Bulloch FFA.

In both the Breeding Gilt and Market Hog divisions, the overall grand champion winners received a cash prize of $300.  The overall reserve champion winners received a $200 cash prize.

The FFA Alumni would like to say thank you to all of those that worked to make the show a success.  Also, a special thank you to all of our sponsors for the show! The show would not have been possible without their generous support.

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the Alumni will be hosting the last show for this year’s Sweet Onion Showdown.  The steer and heifer shows are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Toombs County Agri Center.  Admission for spectators is free and the public is invited to come on out and enjoy the fun!
