Montgomery Co Detention Center "Update"
Wednesday, 14 October 2009

October 14--  The company which wants to build a 1,000-bed prison in Mount Vernon is optimistic the project will become a reality.

The project took a hit from the recession, however, Terry O'Brien with the Irwin County Detention Center told Montgomery County commissioners Wednesday that current interest rates are improving for bond sales and that he's getting positive interest from brokers.

O'Brien reports the company's prison in Ocilla has seen a 17 percent increase in population during the last two months.  His management partner, former U.S. Marshall Tom Rapone, believes emerging Obama immigration polices will impact the type of facility to be built in Montgomery County.  The company is depending on federal contracts to house federal prisoners including illegal immigrants.

Neither O'Brien nor Rapone could give commissioners an estimated start date, but said they believe it's less than 18 months away.
