October 12--  The Toombs County school system's teacher of the year teaches English at Toombs County High School.

Mandy Sanders (R) accepts Teacher of the Year plaque from Cheryl Metzler of the Toombs County School System.

The selection of Mandy Sanders came at the October meeting of the county school board.  "I've only been teaching four years, so for me to get it is overwhelming, I'm truly humbled," she said.

At one time, Mandy's goal was to be a doctor, but now she knows teaching is where she needs to be.  "It took me a long time to get over that I wasn't going to be in the medical field, but now I know that my place is in that room everyday.  I searched for a very long time to find my place and my place is in Room 322 at Toombs County High School.  I get to wake up everyday and get to do something that I love and teach people that I love.  There's no place I'd rather be," she says.

Mandy is also in favor of the Southeast Early College and Career Academy which is getting started at STC in Vidalia.  "Sometimes we in education think all students learn the same way and get the same outcome.  I think this career academy is going to give these students some relevancy and maybe they'll stick with it and that challenge will provide strength and confidence," she observes.

Teachers of the year at individual Toombs County schools were also honored and include Tammy Oliver at Lyons Primary, Cindy Jones at Lyons Upper Elementary, Tammy Stille at Toombs Central Elementary and Patricia Brinson at Toombs County Middle School.
