Vidalia Florist Honored
Thursday, 01 October 2009

September 30--  Her family has been running Pearl Price Florist in Vidalia since 1948 and she started there when she was 20.  This month Martha Price Thompson was named Georgia's Older Worker of the Year during ceremonies at Callaway Gardens conducted by the state's Division of Aging Services.

"I was stunned.  They had told me the first of the month that I had won for the region, but they had all 12 of us lined up and they announced the state award and I got it.  I was the oldest worker there still working," she said.

Mrs. Thompson, who is 82, says she keeps working because she enjoys it and it keeps her going.  "I know a lot of people who have retired and they don't live too long after that," she observes.

Pearl Price Florist was also named the Heart of Georgia Employer of the Year.  Her five employees have been at the florist more than 40 years.  The oldest, Wilena Miller, is 87.  "They're very dependable, and I can always count on them," she says.
