United Way Kickoff
Friday, 18 September 2009

September 17--  The 2010 United Way campaign for Toombs, Montgomery and Wheeler counties is off to a good start.  At its kickoff luncheon Thursday, campaign officials set a goal of $510,000 and heard from campaign pacemaker companies that 42% of the goal has already been pledged.

Vidalia's Wardlaw Brothers performing their original composition, "Imagine If," the theme for this year's United Way campaign.

Campaign chairman Tim Truxel reminded volunteers that the slow economy hurts those who can least afford it the most, and UW executive director Patricia Dixon is confident people in the community will help out.  "You know in the past our community has always stepped up to the plate and we're just excited about what this 2010 campaign is going to do," she said.

Pacemaker companies reporting Thursday include Trane with $137,592; Dot Foods with $34,575; Darby Bank with $16,000 and Walmart with $3,000.  Also the Spring golf tournament raised over $14,000 and the Sweet Onion Bike Ride generated $3,650.

Ninety-nine percent of the money raised by the United Way stays in the local community to help more than 20 social service agencies, according to campaign officials.
