Two Arrested in Montgomery Co for Dogfighting
Tuesday, 15 September 2009

September 15--  Two men are under arrest for alleged dogfighting in Montgomery County.

"We found 31 head of pit bulldogs chained up with log chains to pine trees out there.  Two of the dogs will have to be put down because they were in such bad condition," reported Sheriff Clarence Sanders.

The sheriff says a property owner on the Conner David Road near Higgston notified an Atlanta-based security company, Norred and Associates, which does pro bono work rescuing abused dogs.

"They had the dogs on somebody else's property and these people were wanting the dogs removed from their property and we discovered the dogs, the way they were cut up, had been fighting, so we decided to do an investigation," the sheriff said.

Sheriff Sanders says charges of cruelty to animals, dogfighting, no rabies shot and criminal trespassing have been filed against Kenneth Jordan of Higgston and Terrell Adams of Toombs County.

Chuck Simmons of Norred says what they found at two locations about a half mile apart is typical of other dogfighting operations his company has uncovered.

"There were pit bulls on chains with no water and little food.  They were out in the woods chained to trees with very heavy logging chains.  Many of them were scarred from dogfighting and they were living in pretty inhumane conditions," he said.

Simmons took 22 of the dogs to a rescue shelter near Atlanta where they will be evaluated and rehabilitated if possible.  The remainder were taken to shelters in Mount Vernon and Lyons, according to Sheriff Sanders.

Norred offers rewards of up to $5,000 for tips leading to dogfighting operators.  It's toll free number is 1-877-215-2250.
