Wednesday, 19 August 2009

August 19--  Vidalia police say they have nabbed their first accused felon under auspices of the recently created Toombs-Montgomery Crimestoppers program.

ImagePolice Chief Frank Waits says 31-year-old Nicholas Maurice Singleton of Vidalia was arrested at a local motel based on a tip phoned in to CrimeStoppers.  He says the anonymous caller will be given a cash reward.

According to police, Singleton is wanted in connection with several area armed robberies including this summer's stickup at K.E. Butler's Jewelers.  He also is the last of the 20 people indicted in an alleged local racketeering ring to be apprehended.

Meanwhile, the local Crimestoppers board met this week and agreed to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest in a burglary at 952 George Brinson Road near Uvalda on July 18.  The Toombs County Sheriff's Office says items worth an estimated $6,618, including firearms, were stolen.  The CrimeStoppers phone number is 866-439-6313.

DRUG ARRESTS

Local authorities report six recent drug arrests.

Four people are being charged by Vidalia police for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.  They're identified as Jason Blake Johnson and Celena Michelle Mead, both of Lyons, and Stephen Lee Enoch and Tara Michelle Thompson, both of Kennesaw.

Toombs County Sheriff Junior Kight reports Nicholas Jermaine Brown of Swainsboro is accused of cocaine possession with intent to distribute.  A Vidalia man, 26-year-old Christopher Aaron Scott is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
