Vidalia Approves Community Center Expansion Contract
Wednesday, 12 August 2009

August 12--  The Vidalia City Council is moving out on plans to increase the size of the city's community center.  At its August meeting Tuesday night, the council awarded a $1,230,900 contract to McDonald Construction Company of Vidalia to add nearly 12,000 square feet to the rear of the center and also to do some interior renovation work in the original building which was built in 1997.

Vidalia Finance Director Bill Bedingfield told the council all most delinquent property taxes have been paid.  He also reported most departments are holding expenses down and are below budget.  Bedingfield said sales tax collections are still down but trending upward.

The council was told this year's Vidalia Onion Festival made a $15,000 profit and hopes the Navy's Blue Angels will headline next year's Onion Festival Airshow.

In other actions, the council approved a zoning variance on Brinson Road for the erection of a communications tower and was informed federal stimulus funds will be used to resurface Thompson Pond Road next year.
