Commission Tables Flag Request
Wednesday, 12 August 2009

August 12--  Montgomery County Commissioners have tabled a request to fly flags of the Confederacy on the grounds of the county courthouse.

The request was made by the Montgomery Sharpshooters Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor county men who served in the War Between the States.  Commissioner Franklin Brantley recommended the request be tabled to give commissioners time to get feedback on the idea from their constituents.

In other actions at its August meeting Monday, the commission approved a plan to redistrict the county's commission and board of education voting districts.  The plan was drawn by the Georgia Reapportionment Office to provide an equal population in each district.  It will require approval by the U.S. Justice Department and Georgia General Assembly before taking effect.

The commission is also considering consolidation of some of the county polling places in order to save money on elections.

Commissioners were informed construction should start soon on a new supermarket north of the courthouse in Mount Vernon, and that a new restaurant plans to open in the old Doodle's building near Brewton Parker.

They also turned down a request from Commissioner John Carpenter to let voters decide if they want to allow the sale of liquor in unincorporated areas of the county.  He made the request on behalf of a constituent who wants to open a liquor store near Uvalda.
