Latest Zogby Poll on Pres Obama
Wednesday, 05 August 2009

August 5-- President Barack Obama's job approval has bounced back above 50% in the latest Zogby International national poll. The July 31-August 4 telephone poll of 1,005 likely voters shows 53% approving of Obama's job performance, and 38% disapproving.

Zogby International also uses a four-point scale of job performance. Using that measure, 51% rate Obama as excellent (20.2%) or good (30.4%), and 48% rate his performance as fair (21.6%) or poor (26.0%).

Both measures of job performance have improved over a Zogby Interactive survey of 4,470 likely voters nationwide conducted July 21-24. Then, 48% approved and 49% disapproved. In the same poll, on the four-point scale, 47% gave Obama excellent or good grades, and 53% chose fair or poor.

Obama continues to retain high personal favorability from likely voters. The most recent phone survey found 62% rating the President favorably and 37% unfavorably.

Voters are very much split on whether the nation is heading in the right direction, 47%, or wrong track 46%.

When asked about their personal finances, 36% said they were worse off than four years ago, 15% were better off and 48% were about the same.

Questions about Obama and the nation's direction continue to show heavy partisanship, as well as age and gender differences. Just 16% of Republicans approve of Obama's job performance. Obama is in positive territory with Independents, with a 52%-40% approval-disapproval rating. Among women, 56% give Obama their approval, which is eight points higher than that score among men. As for age, Obama's highest approval of 59% comes from the First Global™ generation, the 18-29-year-olds. The only age cohort in which a plurality disapprove are those 65 and older, with 47% giving Obama a thumbs down.

The margin of error for this phone survey is +/- 3.2 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.
