Lyons Mayor Welcomes Shelter Support
Wednesday, 05 August 2009

August 5-  The city of Lyons is accepting an offer from the local Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (SOAPS) to help animals at the Lyons Animal Shelter.

A delegation from SOAPS made the offer at Tuesday night's Lyons city council meeting and Mayor John Moore accepted their offer.  "The ladies came tonight and came in force, and I'm willing to work with them anyway I possibly can.  They have my word that we will do that and we're just proud they'll come and render the service and I'm willing to do whatever it takes," he said.

SOAPS says it will pay for spaying and neutering of any pets adopted at the Lyons Animal Shelter which houses animals picked up in both Lyons and in Toombs County.  It is also offering to help the city with pet food, cleaning supplies and shelters for the animals.  So far this year, the organization says it has spent $35,000 providing similar assistance to shelters in Vidalia and Hazlehurst.

In other actions Tuesday night, the city council okayed a two percent pay raise for city employees, approved a $65,000 contract with a Spartanburg, South Carolina company for new computers and software for city hall, and avoided a 28 percent increase in health insurance costs by switching to a Nippon Insurance provider in Tifton.

The council also set qualifying dates for November's city council elections.  Candidates will qualify the week of August 31st through Sepember 4.  Seats in the first, second and fourth wards are up for election this year.  The incumbents are Tracey Johnson in the first, Ben Mitchell in the second and Wayne Hartley in the fourth.
