College Merger Ceremony in Swainsboro
Tuesday, 07 July 2009

July 7--  What was Swainsboro Technical College is now the Swainsboro campus of Southeastern Technical College.

Merger ceremonies were held in Swainsboro Tuesday morning signifying the combining of the two technical colleges into one school.  Dr. Larry Calhoun (front row, third from left), former president of Swainsboro Tech, is now the Provost for Southeastern Tech.  Although the economy drove the decision to merge, he says both schools are stronger because of it.

"This merger makes us a more capable college and maintains programs which we might not have been have to maintain.  As the situation has unfolded, the decision makes a lot more sense," he says.

Dr. Calhoun believes the merger will benefit students in the eight-county area served by the merged college.  "We had some programs which Southeastern didn't offer and they had some programs which we didn't offer.  For example, before if a student wanted to take forestry courses not offered on the Vidalia campus, he or she would have to drive to Swainsboro.  Now the courses will also be offered in Vidalia," he notes.

A similar merging ceremony is planned for the Vidalia campus next Tuesday morning at ten o'clock.
